Why you should only alter one thing at a time

Why you should only alter one thing at a time

Postby Chippychap » Tue Aug 10, 2010 4:17 pm

Am trying to make a new, to me, PC like my old one.
just like fixing cars/PC's etc you should only mess with one thing at a time.
I totally ignored that and now my head is going to pop again.I used a driver checker
which updated the onboard sound and video, a Fujitsu Scenic 320.
http://uk.ts.fujitsu.com/rl/servicesupp ... /D1961.htm
NOW the web pages disappear from the top down and the scrolling with my mouse is jerky.
I've just checked and Restore is not on.
Do I just get used to jerky, appropriate somehow, screens?

Ouch! Go into device manager and uninstall the drivers and let the generic ones be re-installed, that will need a re-boot. Then go and find the proper drivers for your motherboard, it should be on the maker's site. I never use or would trust a program to update drivers, mainly because the only ones that need updating are usually the video drivers. If it ain't broke then...;)

augie, when I was a fireman I learned to drive the appliances.
My instructor was ex army, because the distance between driver and instructor was quite big he had a snooker cue.
If I did something wrong he jabbed me with the cue.
D'ya think I need him now whilst I'm trying to destroy this computer?
Seriously, sincere thanks mate.

This gnawed at my brain since yesterday. Have you installed some type of theming software to make your PC look like XP instead of say Vista? These apps are often rife with problematic issues.

TBH that is the only destructive thing I haven't done.
The one I am using at the moment is actually on XP, it's a 2nd hand one that was basically just an os.
All these programs I have tried to install are ones I am used to on a PC running W7 so it may be compatability probs.
I seem to have goosed it well and proper now.
Trying to sort out that driver that I upset yesterday has taken a tragic turn.
The yellow exclamation mark in Hardware manager was "PCI device under Display adaptors.
Thinking i'd found a better driver I uninstalled the PCI device.
NOW, it won't boot. Gets up to the Windows XP logo and then nothing.
If I've scuppered the graphics would installing a video card work?
I cannot re-install anything cos the screen won't now light up.
Back to the 10 year old PC which normally lives under the desk after being long stripped of anything useful.
Does it sound like I've just killed the onboard graphics?

Oh dear, is this a Dell or some such OEM type with pre-installed XP on it? You might be able to restore to factory condition by tapping the F2 key continuosly until you get the options screen and go from there. I don't believe you have anything of importance on there yet as a restore will wipe everything on the HDD.

As to an add-on video card, you'll need an AGP form factor card, if your BIOS even allows it. Tap F8 continously until you get the screen upon boot-up. Do the first part first though to see if you can restore..

Sorry I steered you wrong Ken. :embarrassed:

augie, NO NO NO NO NO NO NO, you didn't do it.
So, Restore, is that sort of an inbuilt recovery disc?
Back to full BIOS and XP?
That sounds quite a good idea.
You didn't lead me astray at all, I can muck-up with no help at all. :yesnod:

OK, I feel better now.:)

Yes, there is a hidden partition on the Hard Disk Drive which should bring you back to factory condition, a pristine state. You will have resurrected some old software adverts/trials but you can easily delete those through the Control Panel. Of course you'll have to get all the XP updates too, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

You mentioned AGP='no' in your PM which would mean to me that the BIOS is looking for a driver for the onboard video. Let's try this first, can you get into 'safemode'? Upon boot-up tap the F8 key continuously. If you can then you could try and install the Fujitsu drivers UniVGA3 that you previously burnt to disk. If that doesn't work then it's time for Plan C which is the restore.:) Your choice.

Thank you.

Do you think this would do it?

I have this on the BIOS.

Not for your current issue. You have to either repair your current install or re-install anew. As to Hiren's mentioned above, try it and see if it boots and then you may be able to install the drivers. I can't help you much there as I've never used it.
