Bad Drive

Postby Stan92057 » Sat Aug 07, 2010 9:14 pm

My C drive is going bad, every reboot its doing an auto SFC and finding nothing every boot. So I'm just going to buy a new hard drive. My question, how can i do this without having to preform a format and clean install on the new drive? before the drive fails completely I have the full install of Vista Ultimate 64bit and the Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit upgrade disks everything is payed for lol just don't want the hassle of installing Vista then Windows 7 that will take 2 days :( lol

Thanks in advance

If you know how and have the correct program, you can clone the old drive to the new drive.

I use and like Casper 6.0, but there are other programs

I use Macrium Reflect. It is free and I have used it to make images of drives that you can then put onto another drive of the same size or larger. If you copy the image correctly, you only need to use this software to make the exact copy.

One suggestion I would make is to use the drive as little as possible (none if at all possible) until you have a chance to backup the files on your drive. The main reason that I am so intent on making sure my data is backed up is because in 2002 I had a hard drive fail and I lost data. If you have a chance to back up the data, do it now.

Backed up. i also have data loss stories unfortunitly. This is the first time i have to replace a bad drive before it actually goes and not doing a full formatt and install
