How to remove Dual Boot on 2 Drive System

Postby dail » Fri Jul 16, 2010 2:10 pm

I have purchased DualBoot Pro

I am having an issue trying to remove one of the Dual Boot Drives.

My system:

Drive 1 = Vista Ultimate x64
Drive 2 = Windows 7 Ultimate x64

When I remove the entry for the Window 7 it boot fine into Vista

If I then physically remove the Windows 7 Drive from the PC and reboot I get an error can't find bootloader.

If I replace the Windows 7 drive it boots straight into Windows Vista.

How can I encourage windows to delete the Windows 7 Drive completely so I can have a 1 drive PC again.

What you will need to do is update the bootloader location by going to the Bootloader screen in DBP. Select the Vista/7/2008 option and then choose a specific drive which will be the drive you want (i.e. Vista). This will update the bootloader on the Vista drive so you can remove the Win7 drive. If that does not work then you will also need to move some additional files over which I is fairly easy.

You mention to move some files over.

Can you be more specific as to which files are required.

Okay, so updating the bootloader did not work then?

If you open up disk management (right click on Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management) you will see a 100MB hidden partition. This is where all the boot configuration files reside. The easiest way to do this is to assign a drive letter to partition.

Go to that drive in explorer and copy all the files there into the root directory of your vista partition. Once that is done, open DBP and reinstall the Vista bootloader to that specific partition.

If that doesn't work, then the only other option is to boot into the Vista DVD and do a startup repair.

jbullard,
Thanks very much for the help

All worked except had to use the Windows 7 Disk to do a repair.
For some reason Vista Repair did not show any operating systems.

jbullard, you are a legend.

Awesome. Glad to hear you got everything straightened out. It is a very tricky situation because of that 100MB hidden partition. We hope to have a more definitive method of doing this in the future. :yesnod:
