Ghosted, cannot boot Winxp.

Postby Azjo » Fri Jun 25, 2010 11:10 am

Hi

I have installed Windows XP as normal on a clean hd, and then made a ghost backup of that partition, and it works.
Then i have formatted harddrive and installed windows 7.
Afterwards i have restored Windows XP on the next partition and used bootpro to add winxp boot.
However, when i choose winxp the monitor goes blank immediately, and the system restarts.

These guides should help you get both operating systems booting again. Your issue is not exactly the same but the solution is similar. Don't miss the first part of the second guide about the Windows 7 system partition.

I pretty much knew all the things from your links but i retried most just to make sure, and it didnt work.

However, i solved it by putting BCD boot on the Winxp drive, so the 3rd partition.
And then i can easily boot XP and windows 7.
So it looks like boot has to be on a windows xp partition, in order to boot both operation systems.
Can this be right? Or is there something odd going on here?

Anyways, that made the 100mb reserved system useless so i rearranged partitions and put Windows XP on C:\ and Windows 7 on D:\ and put boot on C:\ naturally.

More than likely when you Ghosted back XP was your system drive as you can probably see in disk Managment.
