XP Pro 64Bit Only Showing 3 of out 4 GB of RAM
Hi,
I have recently installed an extra 1GB of RAM. When I boot up it only show's 3GB in BIOS. This is also the same when i view my system properties. I have tried the basic tests like removing one of the original RAM modules and replacing it with the new one to make sure it is working, it does. Then I made sure that the 4th memory slot was working by placing 1 module in slot 4, keeping 3 empty and keeping the orignal 2 modules in 1 and 2. It detects all the RAM and shows 3Gb. So, to my understading there's nothing wrong with the RAM modules or the slots.
I then ran CPU-Z to see if that detects all the RAM modules and it did!
I have made sure that my motherboard is compatible with this much RAM, it is... it can support upto 8GB. I have an Abit AT8 x32.
All the modules are identical.
So, I am now stuck. Any idea's why it's not showing.

See if you've got a "memory remap" feature in your BIOS and enable or disable that. I've quite often found I need to reinstall my OS if I add additional RAM, but that is not always necessary. Also, check your memory slot configuration and make sure it's according to your motherboards specifications.

Ok. I checked the memory configurations and they are fine. I can't find any option anywhere on any if the BIOS setup screens for "memory remapping" expect for an option called "MTRR Mapping Mode" and this is set to "Continuous", is this the same thing?
Another thing I tried was resetting the CMOS, that didn't work.

If I may ask. Are you running XP for old apps that Windows 7 wont run? Do you have Windows 7 or Vista to install? I had issues with XP and my Vista/7 64 bit installs had no problems.

I think try creating a small separate partition on which to install a test copy of XP Pro x64...5 GB should be fine and at least you'll know whether reinstalling is going to solve your problem.

Ok, I have just completed a clean install of Windows XP Pro 64bit. And it still does not show the extra memory(to be honest I wasn't expecting it too) seen as even BIOS doesn't see the extra memory.
This problem just has me completely stumped. I'm starting to think maybe the RAM is not functioning correctly which is a real pain as I've had this new RAM module for quite a while when I bought it as a 2Gb Kit.
I'm going to try and update my BIOS but I've never done this before and I know messing with the BIOS can screw up your computer, so I want to be cautious when doing this. I've downloaded the BIOS update from Abit's website and the instructions say to boot your PC in MS DOS mode and Windows cannot be running when you apply the update.
The only MS DOS option I have is "Windows XP Pro 64Bit(MS DOS MODE)", is that OK or is there a way to boot my PC in only MS DOS?
Apart from that, is there anything else anyone can think of that would fix this problem?

Just for in case, check your boot.ini to see if there is any memory limiting switch at the end of the line giving the path to the 64-Bit version of XP.
