Dual Boot Problem Windows7 / WindowsXP
I have a dual boot problem.
I have two hard drives - on C: drive (1) I have Windows XP on D: Drive (0) I had Vista and I was able to dual boot without problems.
I have installed Windows 7 over the Vista OS.
Windows 7 installed and booted O.K. but with no choice of dual boot.
I downloaded DualBootPro and now am presented with the choice of Windows 7 or Windows XP
If i choose Windows 7 it boots O.K.
If I choose Windows XP I get a black screen - and on rebooting Windows 7 informs of a start up problem and offers and completes a repair.
I have tried installing a bootloader - trying both Windows 7 and Windows Legacy - but I really don't know what I should be doing!
I notice that Windows 7 is now on C: drive and XP on D: whereas formerly I had XP on C: drive and Vista on D: drive.
From Windows 7 I can see all the files on D:
Please advise - I urgently need to be able to boot up my Windows XP.

Re: Dual Boot Problem Windows7 / WindowsXP
I have copied ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini from my XP drive and pasted them into my Win 7 drive as instructed but there is no difference - when when XP is chosen the screen goes black and there is no evidence of activity. On reboot in Windows 7 I am informed that there was a startup problem and offers to repair.
I have repeated this several times - but the result is that I still cannot boot into my Windos XP.
Is it possible that my boot.ini file is incorrect?
I am afraid to make changes there in case I cannot access my Windows 7
Please advise.
Frederick

Re: Dual Boot Problem Windows7 / WindowsXP
Editing the boot.ini effects XP only. It will not effect Win 7 at all.
Also make sure in DualBootPro you have XP as a Legacy OS

Re: Dual Boot Problem Windows7 / WindowsXP
I had XP as legacy.
I opened boot.ini with DualBootPro and took the risk of editing it.
This is how it looked:
;
;Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems.
;Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options.
;
[boot loader]
timeout=4
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /FASTDETECT
;c:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /CMDCONS
I changed rdisk(0) in the default line 7 to rdisk(1) - rebooted and BINGO! when I chose XP it loaded!!
I now have an entry in the loader for Windows XP AND one called WINDOWS (default)
Here is a copy of Windows Boot Manager and Windows Boot Loader (from within Windows 7)
Can you tell me what is wrong with it and how it should be corrected?

Thank you for your response.
So which lines should be amended - to what should I change them and how do I go about doing it?
(I am still feafrful of losing access to my Windows XP OS which is the media Centre Edition and has all my major programs amd data files on it.)

Re: Dual Boot Problem Windows7 / WindowsXP
The best thing to do is rename the entries in DualBootPro to XP and XP restore and leave it as it.
