Vista and Windows 7 installation on dual HHD's

Vista and Windows 7 installation on dual HHD's

Postby PRstud » Tue Oct 13, 2009 5:09 pm

I currently have dual boot XP and Vista on separate HHD's. I will be taking out the XP HDD out and installing a new larger and faster HDD in its place to install Windows 7 on it next week.
What will I have to do to get Vista and Windows 7 to dual boot on separate HDD's? I have searched the forum but cant seem to find anything on this. (maybe I missed it) Is there a guide?

You should be OK as you're going from older to newer installs. However, I'd eventually want the fastest HDD to do the heavy lifting as to boot. You might want to make a migration plan to the newest drive.

You should be able to run VistaBootPro when running Vista.
Remove the XP entry
Reboot
If Vista does not boot then insert the Vista DVD and do a startup repair. This should get Vista back to running.
Install new hard drive
Boot to Vista to make sure everythign is running and the new hard drive is seen by the Disk Manager.
Format the hard drive with Vista
Insert the Win 7 DVD and boot to it.
Install Windows 7 without creating partitions.
When you install Win 7 it should automatically pick up Vista and create the menu for you.
