Windows 7 RTM good/bad experiences

Windows 7 RTM good/bad experiences

Postby shreader » Fri Aug 07, 2009 11:35 am

I burned the .iso last night & clean installed the x86 Ultimate edition this AM.

It was very slow (installing) after the loading files part it just sat there no matter which DVD ROM I used.
Then it was very slow after hitting the "Install Now" button.

Since I wiped my XP Pro x86 (system) partition for this install, I also lost the boot menu, I'll fix that later after I get the W7 x64 installed on another partition.

After hitting the "Next" button, after formatting away XP it took 16 minutes to hit the desktop, incl entering the product key, etc.

I finished my own download this morning and installed the x64 -- installation seemed to take about the usual amount of time for any W7 builds I've used.

But then I hit a snag -- an annoying IE8 bug that's been, well, bugging me for many weeks. But this time I managed to pinpoint where it seemed to be coming from, and did some troubleshooting, which only slowed down my W7 setup for about --- ooooh -- 3 hours or so :P

Still, workaround discovered, bug report made on *public* Microsoft forums :roleeyes and back in action LOL

Congrats guys! ^*^ With the ISO images you downloaded, did you have the choice to install another edition of Windows 7 or not? I'm downloading Windows 7 Professional as that seems to be the version that will be available to most, and am wondering if I'll be able to check out Ultimate from the same DVD or must I download it separately?

JD already checked this out, and the different versions are indeed linked to the installation media.

I have actually strongly suspected, via information received from Microsoft, that they would be so limited for some months now ; but was unfortunately bound by NDA not to reveal this :(

Finished the x64 ultimate install awhile ago but have been transferring files from backups.

I timed it this time & it took 9 minutes to finally get to the License accept window & my from hit the next button (after formatting the RC x64 away) to hitting the desktop took 23 minutes, a tad longer than the x86 installation took.

I have not had any IE8 problems, knock, knock.

Installed a few apps & they ran fine.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going to start moving all the Vista x86 folders/ files over to W7 x86 now.
I did Dl, install & added my license/registration & 580 MB of data files to IncrediMail & it appears to work fine.

Fixed the boot problem w/ the DVD/ Repair your computer - on the first pass ^*^

Life is good :yesnod:
Taking the day off from work today, gonna hit the ocean in 15 minutes & let x86 get its stuff settled in.

Its good to know that the Problem Steps Recorder is still included in the RTM
To start it just type in PSR in the Start menu Search box & hit enter key.

I cannot get the WinSat roving spheres to work anymore though.

Edit I added a new Log-in picture (thanks Daniel for the link awhile back)

WOW -- nice login screen there JD, and nice doggie, an old friend of yours I think ? :)

Windows rating is a little down from build 7229 on my rig :

7229 :

RTM :

But I guess that's mainly a graphics driver issue, and nVidia should provide better drivers soon.

BTW how exactly *do* you change the logon image again ? :)

Thank Julian

I met Dylan on his first trip to Tavarua about 5 years ago. He new shares the position as Activities Mgr. (non paying job but great benefits) 6 mos a year.

The login changer was a tweak & several people made small apps. the one I have (W7C LogonUI Changer) worked the best IMO so I've been using it ever since. There may be newer one out there though.
