Web Download Installation
Hi Guys, decided to join the darkside with Ubuntu.
I have sent for the disc to install it on my PC.
For me, the problem of just downloading it is the full disc format and installation.
The only thing I've ever done is install from a disc where it takes you through the full
wipe and then install, I don't know how to do it from a web D/L.
I'm looking forward to it, for me it will give longer life to an older PC with a ropy old OS
instead of paying a fortune on a Microsoft OS.
Thanks for being there guys.

Re: Web Download Installation
I've never managed to get a web download to work because Linux distros seem to never want to recognize my network hardware until after the installation. I would recommend simply installing from the disc.
Mac OS 10.6.7 - Personal
Ubuntu Server 11.04 - Server
Re: Web Download Installation
If you download the Ubuntu 9.04 desktop version .iso file from HERE and burn it to a CD, you'll be able to install as normal and follow the very clear (similar to Windows) installation procedure.
Re: Web Download Installation
The first tip you will need after downloading the Ubuntu OS is how to get the OS onto a CD or DVD in the right format. Usually you will want to download an ISO file (or .iso file also referred to as an image) and use a program, like imgburn to write the data to a disc that will boot. Putting an ISO file on a disc by copying it to a disc will not make it a bootable OS disc, you have to use a program that extracts the files from the ISO and burns them to a disc, all in one step.
Do that and you will get a disc equal to the OS disc that you get by ordering it.

I've actually bought an original disc off fleabay.
The thing that frightens me is that it has taken 50 years to find you guys and i'm worried that by using Ubuntu I cannot access
the stuff we have here.

What do you want to be able to do with Ubuntu? What files do you want to be able to access that you access now in your every day life?
Re: Web Download Installation
TBH, I have two PC's, one is the old replaced machine.
My "best" one was struck down by a virus, discussed on this site.
Because it affected updates M/S were prepared to help.
Again, TBH their "fix" seemed to affect my drivers, code 39 with no option to uninstall and reinstall.
Advice from here was that it may need XP to be repaired or reinstalled.
I could not get on the 'net as the drivers were Network stuff.
I hoiked my old PC from its retirement shelf to get online and start trying to fix the other machine.
The XP on my main PC is real but I only have the licence stuck on the back of the tower so repairing is a no no.
The XP on this oldie is hookey and Micrrosoft is pecking at my copy as we speak.
As a toe-rag on benefits, Mr Gates wants $130 for a genuine licence, that is one weeks money for me and my wife.
Soooooooooooooooooooooooo.
Ubuntu is free, it supports firefox and my mail service.
I can't ask for yours and M/S's help if i can't get online.
There, bared my innermost soul.
Take care Guys.

If you just need access to the Internet and a few common applications, Ubuntu will work fine. Firefox comes with Ubuntu, Ubuntu has a mail program that will connect to IMAP and POP3 mail servers, and if you need to be able to read and write Microsoft Office files (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) download OpenOffice.org, a free and open office application suite.

Thanks for that Mnemonic.
We'll see what happens.

Doesn't OpenOffice come installed? I think it does...
