DVD rom isn't bootable

my Inspiron 1545 laptop can't boot using a bootable cd/dvd. but the rom functions very well in reading & burning cd/dvds.
I've almost tried using xp/vista/ubuntu/debian/mint dvds. After all I loaded the bios to its defaults Still the problem exists. can someone help me?????

Most laptops have a key to press to select which device you want to boot to
