Wireless network not recognized [FIXED]

Wireless network not recognized [FIXED]

Postby phileysmiley » Fri Jul 10, 2009 8:11 pm

Well I just got my brand new Toshiba laptop with Windows Vista and right off the bat I have a problem. It is not recognizing my wireless router. My wireless network is not showing up under available networks.

It is recognizing other wireless networks in the area so I know the hardware is enabled and I can see that the light is turned on.

Also, I do have another laptop which is connected to the wireless network and it is working just fine. I even turned it off just to see if perhaps it was overloaded or there was a limit to my number of connections but it still doesn't show up in available wireless networks and I refreshed it several times.

I turned the router off an on.

I checked everything on this page:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Window ... 21033.mspx

Shouldn't Vista recognize the network automatically?

Is the router setup to broadcast the SSID?

Wouldn't it have to be in order for my other laptop to work fine?

No, you can setup the router so it doesn't have to send out the SSID. You could try manually entering the information into the Wireless setup if you know what your network is called. I've never done this before.

Or, if the SSID broadcast is disabled, you could just enable it on your router.

How do I do find out if it is enabled or not?

It depends on what type of router you have. On mine, I type 192.168.1.1 and login with the credentials setup during the router setup and then go to the "Wireless" page.

What type of router do you have?

It's a Netopia.

I have tried 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.101, and several other numbers are nothing comes up. I had thought maybe I could manually connect by entering the WEP key etc. but I cannot access the router.

EDIT: nm I found the number.

Oh... that was stupid of me. You have to be connected to the net via the router to access the router setup. I'm sorry.

Does Vista give you a spot to manually enter the Router SSID?

I fixed it. ^*^ I tried almost every option under the connection center. I had to pick manually connect but then instead of WEP I picked 802.1x THEN it took me to another screen where I entered the network name THEN to another screen where I entered the key.

I don't know why I couldn't just enter the network name, security type, and encryption key on the first page.

Now I have 2 wireless networks showing up, one that says local only and one that says local and internet. :confused

Anyway, it looks like I can finally get online but no I will be away until Sunday anyway. Oh well, I guess I'll get started then.

Thanks. :notworthy
