HP Computer Beeps
I am helping a friend with his HP computer that had a hard drive failure (SMART actually caught it before he lost any data) and while I was installing the new hard drive I laid the computer on its side. When I powered up the computer, the fans turned on, but the display did not and the computer beeped, 1 short beep then 1 long beep.
I looked up on HP's website what the beeps were, but they only have information about 4 beeps or more. I checked out ASUS's website because the computer has an ASUS IPI8L-LA motherboard, but ASUS doesn't have any information on the motherboard.
Well, when I put the computer back on its side, I powered it on again to make sure all of the fans were spinning, including the video card fan, and the computer started right up.
Anyone have any idea what the two beeps might have been? I am going to remove and reseat the RAM and the video card, but I would like to know what the heck happened.
System Specs are:
HP Pavilion Media Center m8100y
ASUS IPI8L-LA motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0GHz
2GB of RAM
GeForce 8400GS
Re: HP Computer Beeps
Does the computer have an intrusion switch, maybe it set something off, just a guess though

Re: HP Computer Beeps
I looked around for one, but have been unable to find it. I thought that might be the issue at first, so I put the computer back together, but it didn't change anything. Now I have the side panel off and it is running without a hitch.
Re: HP Computer Beeps
Maybe since it was on its side something just wasn't making a real good connection for a second or something, if it is running fine than I would leave it alone.

Re: HP Computer Beeps
I pulled out my ASUS P5QC manual & it mentions several beeps & what they mean.
It refers to them as "BIOS beeps" as they come after the POST.
Here are the first 2 (of 4) choices & descriptions, the next are for 4 & 5 beep mixes.
1- short beep = VGA detected, Quick boot set to disabled, No keyboard detected.
1- continuous beep followed by 2- short beeps, then a pause (repeated)= No memory detected.
