Erm, thermal paste is not an option but a necessity unless your heat/sink/fan unit comes with a factory pad and lands on a clean chip, personally I get rid of the pad using %70 isopropyl alcohol and then applying a rice sized bead of Artic Silver 5. Others have their own faves.

you have to use thermal paste, its not a just incase kind of thing
