Deja vu... Dell M1210 won't boot

Deja vu... Dell M1210 won't boot

Postby ar1stotle » Wed Jan 07, 2009 8:05 pm

OK, so I had that problem earlier with the desktop that didn't have any video output and didn't seem to be doing any boot sequences. Well, now I've got a M1210 laptop that's doing the same thing. No Dell bios screen or any indication of anything on the screen. When I turn it on, the fan turns on, as does a blue LED. The WiFi light blinks for a split second, the HDD activity light turns on for about 2 seconds, the DVD drive makes a noise, and then it just sits there. I tried removing sticks of RAM, the wireless card, re-seating the screen cable/keyboard/bios battery to no avail. Guess I need help brainstorming.... it's just out of its 1 year warranty btw.

Somtimes just tightening the screws on the bottom of the laptop will help,

Scratch that: no fans turn on. I thought it was a fan but it was just the HDD spinning up

Tightening screws didn't change anything :(

You mentioned reseating everything but the HD.

Have you tried it with and without the battery, and is the battery fully charged.

Have you tried moving the power cable around (and I mean gently moving it back and forth where it connects to the laptop) to see if any lights come on e.g. the battery charging indicator light.

I did reseat the HD as well. I have tried it without the battery, and it is fully charged. I didn't check for any lights when plugging the power adapter in, because it worked fine without the battery in so I figured it was in working order. I can double check though.

OK so apparently in order for the Dell laptops to give you an error code, you need to boot holding the function key. I got an error where the left 2 lock lights were flashing and the right one was on: indicating a video card error according to Dell's website. Looks like we're SOL?

that is a bummer that it is out of warranty, it would probably cost more to replace the Video card, if it were/is replaceable, than you could get a comparable replacement laptop

Well I found a used MB with integrated video that is $349.00 http://www.discountelectronics.com/inde ... ail&p=2667
