Upgrading My Computer-Using Same Hard Drive
Hi all, Merry Christmas to everyone here!
OK now to the point, I am about to start building myself a whole new computer, the only thing that I am not going to get rid of is my Sata 1 HDD, my question is: When i have put my new computer together can i just plug in my HDD and Vista Ultimate will boot up normally?
I am currently using a P4 3.2 GHz with 1gb DDR2 533 ram and am upgrading to a Core 2 Duo 7300 (2.66Ghz) with 3gb DDR2 800 ram. At the moment Vista takes about 5 minutes to completely start up, will the new system also make it go much faster?
Thankyou in advance.
You are just changing the CPU is that correct
Then it will not be a problem

Yes, a dual core will make Vista boot up faster but you don't have a shabby older processor either. There's no way it should take that long to boot up on your P4, I had a much slower AMD proc that booted in abit more than a minute.!
Have you disconnected everything like USB cables and extra cards besides the main video card? It could be that Vista is looking for drivers. BTW, did you you remove all the crap promotional junk yet? That will certainly slow you down on boot up too.

Well, it's time for the sack for me as it's 2AM here. I hope you got it fixed.

It may or it may not boot, basically depending on whether or not the new motherboard will have a similar enough chipset to the old one --- however, because of the methods that are used by Vista to install itself, it will be very unlikely that your configuration would be optimal even if it were bootable, and a clean install of Vista would be very strongly recommended in my opinion.

Absolutely !!! 5 minutes is a heck of a long time for Vista to boot !!
Please note that if switching your current setup to a new motherboard successfully booted, any faster boot time that you might observe would be more due to the fact that your system boot is currently very very slow ; and NOT an indication that the HDD + Vista migration had been successful
---
Actually, I would take that 5 minute boot time, even with only 1GB of medium speed RAM, as an indication that your Vista needed a clean install in any case
---
But you never know, you might get lucky
