Trying out Linux

I'm interested in Linux. Mainly curious. What is the best Linux to use ( i heard there are many versions, im not sure) for someone who wants to mess around and just want something new to play around with since i can't play with Vista yet.
Something that is almost as functional as Win XP.

If you're looking for something to get the basics that is fairly easy to use, you should probably check out Ubuntu as it is one of the most user friendly distros out there. It has a fairly decent support network as well. Suse is another that is fairly easy to use and install, though the last I used it, the programs installation method was more difficult than that of Ubuntu, but it could have changed with subsequent releases.

You can also get LiveCD's which don't install on your system but just run from the CD, much slower but a good way to find what you like in an easier manner and not reinstalling everytime. Some decent ones besides Ubuntu areand in no particular order:

PCLinuxOS
Simply Mepis
Knoppix, not sure if it has an installer but a great rescue disk in its own right.
Mandriva One

and many many more.

i am always surprised whenever people suggest ubuntu to a newbie. while it is a good and stable solution, and nice user {friendly} interface. it is not a starting point to anybody who has never get his/her hands dirt with linux.

there are lots of prettier and much {livecd or hard drive install} easier to use linux. distrowatch.com all the informations staying close to your suggestion, i would guarantee that he or anybody would be much happier with LINUX MINT, a linux distro that is built on ubuntu foundation
