Deadly virus attack. . Help needed

Hi frenz, i'm screwed up for last two days when my system is attacked by a deadly virus(trojan)ever in my 7 years of computer life,i had avast n spybot installed, but no use,one fine day when i started my os,my screen was just having a wallpaper without any desktop icons,i tried several methods and found that its a virus attack,so i formatted my c:\ and reloaded the OS. . . Everything was fine, i accessed some files from the other drives and suddenly a warning came,i installed NOD 32 this time.. But no use,the virus deleted the nod32.Exe file itself! ! . . Now i want my data in the other drives, ie d,e and f at any cost, problem is that i can't start NERO , or any other stuffs even in safe mode.,can't install any other antivirus softwares too, now i'm planning to format c and load Any LINUX version so that these virus won't affect it and i can burn my data easily.. What do you guys think about this? Pls gimme suggestions about this and also any other methods if u know.. Thanks in advance, frenz..

Hmm, since you formatted and all, you must have re-installed something bad to be able to do that. Have you tried the new online scan from Eset/NOD32?

There are quite a few DOS based Virus scanners which you can use from a bootable CD. This is often the safest, best, and sometimes only good way to remove such nasty Windows based viruses. The more info you have on the exact virus that attacked you though, the better chance you can find specific removal instructions on the web. And yes, there are some very nasty viruses and spyware programs out there which will disable other programs, and basically make your system unusable.

You can download something like F-Prot for dos: http://support.f-secure.com/enu/corpora ... rdos.shtml or F-Secure for dos: http://www.f-secure.com/download-purchase/tools.shtml

Both are free. You will then need to boot into Dos either using a DOS floppy or Bootable CD with DOS - if you don't have one of these, you can create on or the other with downloads found here: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

Boot into DOS using one of the above mentioned methods, then follow the instructions for the Anti-Virus product you download.

Try downloading the trail version of NOD32 instead of Linux to begin with.

Do you actually get to see what's on the screen or is it completely illegible? When using the Live CDs, I don't think you can affect too many changes as everything is written to a temporary RAM disk which is cleared when the system re-starts. To download and use the nVidia drivers, you'll have to install Ubuntu onto your hard drive.

However, if you're only starting to use Linux because of a virus problem in XP you'll probably bump into more problems. Linux and Windows are light-years apart. The GUI you see in Linux is, really, only a pretty addition to make it somewhat more user friendly, the real power of the OS lies in the Command Line. A lot of configuration things require the use of the CLI instead of whichever Desktop you choose.

If you're really unsure as to what you're doing in Linux, I'd suggest trying to get your XP installation back up and running first. You can then set about learning Linux at a more leisurely pace.

Follow some of the instructions given above about scanning the machine using a boot disk.

At the very worst, re-install windows (without being connected to the net) and then, immediately after the installation has finished, make sure the Windows Firewall is on, reconnect to the net (the Windows Firewall will go some way to providing you with a little protection), install an AV package (NOD32 is the best available by a country mile), get it updated and then make sure you run an in-depth scan of EVERY drive in the system, not just the one Windows is installed on. Don't install anything else until you've run the scan and cleaned up anything it's come across!
