Free Tools Essential To Keep On A Flash Drive

Free Tools Essential To Keep On A Flash Drive

I am the local go to "nerd" that all the people I know call when thier computer craps out on them.

Here is what my freeloading friends ask me... in order

#1 "I can't get Online"

#2 "I think I have spyware/virus"

#3 "My computer seems slow"

#4 "I deleted all my photos/music/movies/documents by mistake"

#5 "How do I undo what I did... No I don't have system restore"

#6 "My Hard Drive is making a lot of noise"

#7 "I am missing (insert hive file here) and I cant boot up"

#8 "My OS it missing?"

#9 "My accessory is not recognized"

#10 "Whatever you did made it worse"

That covers about 99% of what I get. I got tired of burning software to CD and installing it so I bought a 2g Flash drive. Now that I have it I want to put tools on it that fix things as hassle free as possible, to cover the above problems. Naturally no one bothers to pay me since "I enjoy this kinda nerd stuff" so free tools are awesome. If you know of something that cost money but is worth it I will buy it just to make my life easier though.

Please list what you have used, and what it's for, I think this will become a very useful list to many people!

Thanks for the time, research, understanding,
Martini ^*^

Everest, Ad-Aware, Spybot, NOD32 Trial installer (and final for when you convince them to buy it), winsock fix, and that's about all I can think of that the moment. Oh yea, up to date drivers for popular hardware like video cards and such (of course you could always just do it on a case by case basis). Might help to have a linux livecd with you too for when you need to see whether something is a hardware problem or just windows being dumb. Also have quick installers for things like Winrar that should be used often. And lastly, get Scanner. Makes it really easy to show people where their hard drive space has gone.

Good luck ^*^

Edit: Some more stuff that you might want to consider puttin on it-- Firefox installer, Thunderbird installer, and OpenOffice installer. All great freeware apps that will be handy when you go to do a job and realize someone doesn't have something like Word or if they're still using IE/Outlook.

I like AVG anti-virus 7.5 FREE version, Zone Alarm Trial version, WinZip, Aida32. Also I load up my collection of USB flash drives with Free stuff from MajorGeeks & Cnet Download.com. I am looking forward to prices still dropping on USB flash drives to get a 8 gig USB flash drive for really cheap. Wow you could sure load that up with just about everything.
