Plan to install NOD32 AV - Need Advice re Good complementary Firewall
Hi everybody! I'm a newbodie, as of today.
In need of some advanced help re selection of solid uncomplicated
firewall to work along side NOD32 -
Based on direct experience/tech concerns we have eliminated:
ZoneAlarm Pro, KIS6, Norton, Trend Micro,Comodo,Outback.
A strong leak-test performance is important but we are looking for sw
that is easy to run without the numerous conflicts caused by strong pkg.'s
such as ZoneAlarm Pro or KIS6.
We would very much appreciated any advice. Thanks!
Currently:Thinkpad x41, 1000k mem,3yr. old Netgear Router and XP sp2.
At the moment when I do run a firewall software, it is Kerio Firewall
And I use NOD32 with SpySweeper.

If I may, a follow-up question for NT50:
Would running NOD32/SpySweeper/SpyBlaster with
periodic SpyBot scans (without full-time online Firewall)
pose significant risks? Thanks!
There are two schools of thought on this, but I looked into it awhile ago. I even asked about it here myself. I did a LOT of research on it. Here is the bottom line:
While you should not run two AV or firewalls at the same time, there is NO RISK from having more than one antispyware app running at the same time. In fact, most security specialists recommend having more than one since they don't all catch everything. I have Spysweeper and Windows Defender on one rig, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and Ad-Aware on another, and Spybot and Windows Defender on another. Other OS's that I have with various combinations of the above.
I believe that the Windows Firewall is good enough that you don't need a 3rd party firewall. I use the Windows Firewall on 2 rigs. I only have a 3rd party firewall on one.

As secondary defense I use Spybot with Teatimer enabled which locks the registry, along with SpyWareBlaster. This combination with ZoneAlarm and AVG free, I haven't had one problem since I started using this config.

To answer your question and to duplicate another post from Larry.
No risk EXCEPT if you run two antivirus programs. I see that you did not list two therefore no risk in slowing a computer down. Spysweeper run memory resident, guards against spyware/keyloggers/other/ and even cookies that track you.
Best configuration would probably be NOD32/Spy Sweeper/ and some other spyware detection like Spybot. Although I do not like teatimer in Spybot; just use it for a scan to make you feel better. As for a firewall, XP firewall is ok but no the best. My firewall is the power button, I turn it of when not in use; lets see them break into my system when the power is off. Make sure you are running a router also and turn the ping block on etc; run WPA on wireless and you should not have issues.
I have Kerio firewall BUT I do not run it.
Windows Defender is OK, that is all I will say about it.
Counter Spy is OK; MS and Counter Spy act the same.
So to answer your question about a firewall, Depends on what files you are trying to protect.
I spent $800.00 on a firewall for a law firm, that is NOT a software firewall though. Important files.
