Virus Bulletin offers independent testing of all major antivirus programs. They are usually one of the quoted testing sites. You have to belong to see many of the results, but it's a free subscription.
Here are ratings of 10 common AV programs. NOD32 isn't number 1 either.

That site is famous for it's rankings that don't use independent testing for their results. They rely on advertisements and do no actual testing. On several sites that do nothing but test "in the wild" viri, Bitdefender, their number one, is not that good.

ok guys I will tell you the real reason why I put this post up,
My friend always uses Norton and is praising about it all the time and reccommending other not so frequent and less computer literate users to to try Norton.
His explanation is its flawless and that its gona be the same for everybody out there.
I have explained to him how NOD32 has worked for me in the past but there is not a reputable or known award that it has.
I tried pcworld's ranking and they has Bit defender as their Number 1, and NOD32 wasnt even in the list.
I was looking for a more stable answer supporting NOD32 over Norton.
Cheers for the posts guys but these links again were at the website and ofcourse every website is will say nothing but good about their product

Check www.virusbtn.com then. That's the site that produced that review. You have to sign up to read their articles and reviews but it's free.
They are an indendant site that give information about malware and malware detection software.

You hit the nail on the head with TopTenReviews. They rated an antispyware software number 1 that was owned by the #1 spyware publishing company (PS.. The same anti spyware that is in AOL)

Reviews are generally somewhat biased, even by the well knows publications. Generally I rely more on the opinions of people who work day in and day out with computers. There are certainly a number of worthy AV programs out there - I personally do not consider Norton's to be one of them.
From observing many posts here on PRO, I would say that Norton's is listed as a problem cause much more often than as a recommended program. On the other side, I have heard very little negative comments about NOD32, and I run it on a couple of my machines and love it.
While virus detection rates are certainly the top priority when choosing a product to safegaurd your computer, a program which uses a lot of resources, and causes conflicts with many common software products is definitely something to consider staying away from *cough* Norton's*cough*
