Weird Virus thingy (FIXED)
Hi guys, my dad has recentlly got the internet on his laptop and doesn't really know what he's doing so he has most likely clicked on a pop-up or download something without reallising it but here goes...
There is a little icon in the 'notification area' that looks like the windows update icon but then changes every so often to a red circle with a white cross in the middle and a pop-up keeps showing saying something about 'the computer having viruses, and you should download their software or what not' (you know the drill). When i roll the curser over it, it says 'Virus Alert!'.
Anyway i have run nod32 and ms antispyware both of which have not solved the problem. i have tried right clicking on the icon but nothing happens at all along ith left click, middle click and any other click possible. i have run msconfig and cancelled almost every startup item and have looked in the task manager and the program files folder and cant find anything at all!
Can someone Please help me out here.. I'm at a complete loss!
TIA

A couple of things you can check - if it is XP, you can right click in the taskbar notification area and select 'Customize Notifications' - this may give you an idea as to what the icon is for. Also, you can check your running processes in the task manager (make sure you click the box that says 'Show processes from all users), look for anything out of the ordinary - alternatively, if you are running MS antispyware, you can view running processes by going to advanced tools>system explorers>running processes. You can also check startup programs in the system explorers>Startup Programs section. If you see an entry you are unsure of, google it, and if you can't find anything, post the process here and we will take a look for you.
I have done all of those and havn't managed to find anything strange, it's as if it doesn't exist, the only place i can see is in the 'customize notificatoins' area where it just says 'Virus Alert!'...
Here's the pop-up it's displaying:

Generally speaking though, and just BTW, the most effective means of cleaning a hard drive of infections would usually be to unplug the drive, plug it into a different PC, and run the AV from the OS in that PC -- having said that, congratulations on fixing your rig
