The Mono project is an open source effort sponsored by Novell to create a free implementation of the .NET Development Framework.

Mono includes a compiler for the C# language, a Common Language Runtime (CLR) for the Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) and a set of class libraries. The runtime can be embedded into your application. It implements both ADO.NET and ASP.NET.

I personally would rather code for mono than microsoft's .net because it offers extra functionality and is cross-platform. I have yet to start learning C#, but I know it's the next language I'm shooting for.

mono's great, I am working on getting DotNetNuke (http://www.dotnetnuke.com) working on mono's ASP.Net module for Apache. Then I can use a Linux box to host my web site!!
