Poor Wireless range on new card

Postby evvd-caec on Sun Jul 27, 2008 2:54 pm

I just added a wireless card in a laptop (scrounged up from a dead laptop) in place of my modem. The card worked fine in the old laptop, but in the current one I'm only getting a range of a couple feet. 10 feet in the same room would be pushing it.

I have adapted the wires coming from the RJ12 connector to connect to the antenna ports on the wireless card. I have confired connectivity. I figured that pluging a phone cord into the port would increase my range, but to no avail. I have traced the wires in the old laptop and found them to be attached only to small aluminium plates behind the screen.

Any thoughts on how to incease the range? Would there be a difference between using a phone cord and attaching the same plates to my computer?

you could always buy a new antenna to increase the range or buy a new wireless card =] but i would suggest the first one P.S. buy the antenna only if you can connect it to the laptop wireless card

If i were to buy an antenna, would there be any problem with rigging it to connect to the laptop's phone port then?
