Most guys on the MS groups have had luck with Avast for the X64 and AVG for X86.

Too bad. I run 5219 on my desktop and 5231 on my lappy. I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to Win XP. It's like trying to run NT when you've been using XP.

i can't get any good AV program to work in 5231 x64 :no Symantec and NOD are the two i consider good, and both have problems with the real-time scanner. MS Antispyware has problems working right in this build too.

NOD32 has worked well for me on Vista x86 build 5231. Thanks guys for pointing me to it!

imnuts, I don't have an x64 pc to test on. Does NOD work for you on x86? Symantec has failed miserably to install for me at all. You say it "has problems with the real-time scanner." Does this mean you got it to install? What version and how?

i can get both symantec corp 10 x64 to install and NOD32 x64 to install, it's just that if the realtime scanner starts up, it causes BSODs, which restarts the system and turns off the realtime scanner on the next boot. i gave up on x86 stuff as i got sick of the instability of XP, so I switched to XP x64 because it was a lot more stable and ran better, then I got a mac and used that for a lot of stuff that I used to do on my PC, so I put x64 Vista on it and haven't run a 32 bit OS on my good computer for about 5-6 months now. I think the main reason for the stability is the 64bit OSes better memory management over standard XP.

I feel that if you're confident enough, you may not need an anti-virus for Vista. Since Vista is in beta, a virus would think of Vista as an unknown OS. And even if [you think that] it starts to destruct your OS, Vista will handle it for you. That is the reason why there are .luacdf files scattered all over your hard drive.

I experienced the power of Vista's security once, when I accidentally opened a virus. (I won't tell where I got it.) As usual, it would look like nothing happened. After a restart, I was surprised when I got two errors from the file that the virus generated. I found the file, ended its process, and deleted it. No more virus. And that happened yesterday. No, really. :yesnod:

That is, if you are really confident enough. If you're not confident enough, try AVG Free. Tried it in all Vista builds (except 5231 and 3xxx), and it works. And it's free (hence the name). Everyone loves free nowadays. Heh.

I am confident. Period.

i hate AVG, and i doubt that it will work in the x64 build. I've found quite a few things that worked in previous x64 builds that either don't work or kill the OS in 5231. If i was to install any AV product, it might be Avast as they have a fairly good free product, but since not many people have good 64bit AV programs out yet, I'll just stick to nothing until the next build or until someone updates their software.

not in the x64 build of 5231, although it did in 5219 x64, and apparently it works fine in the 32 bit build of 5231. everything but AMON works, so it's mostly pointless to use if the main protection isn't working.
