New Yorkers please look

Postby jojo on Sun Feb 09, 2003 3:04 am

That should catch one or two hopefully. Can anybody tell me what "The Big Apple" means? And also what is a New York minute. How did these expressions come to be. Just a curious Albertan. Thanks guys. :blink

Thanks, but I forgot, according to Don Henley.

In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
Things can get pretty strange

I thought I knew why NYC is called the Big Apple but it wasn't what the New York Times article pointed out. That is a much more interesting explanation though. I think the expression "in a New York minute" simply means fast -- everything in NY is fast..... :yesnod:

Hi Experties, its great to see you here. I'm glad to have another Jerseyite with us to acquaint everyone with our beloved NYC. I left it as a young child, but I still consider it home. What brings you there every week?.... :)

Mariclaire, a NY minute comes from the fact, as someone pointed out, that everything is done faster in NYC. The big apple was a old prison expression from the late 1800's. Funny that the politicians didn't know that a 100 years later when they decided to use it as a tourist slogan.

I prefer to think that 'The Big Apple' means it's a place for everyone irrespective of color or creed. :yesnod:
