NAS or server?

NAS or server?

Postby smileymike » Tue Aug 29, 2006 4:32 pm

Hi,

I have been thinking about getting a HD storage added to my network.

The reason i need is because i need an access to my emails, and files from either laptop or PC via wireless router.

At the moment, on both laptop, and PC can keep a set of emails on each computer. e.g. a group of emails are stored in laptop cant be viewed by PC and vica versa. I use thunderbird software, exactly same account setting. The emails is stored in Document & Setting folder on both PC and laptop.

Is it possible to change where emails stores on NAS if i bought it? And can both PC and laptop access to the emails in NAS?

I know NAS is just a storage connected to router. But what server is for? How do you compare a NAS and a server? Whats pro and cons are?

I got old PC and it doesn't work well, sometimes it reset itself(not typical blue screen). I tried everything from updating BIOS to change the battery.

Maybe i can set up a sever for an hobby as well getting NAS. What is the best server software for free? I know nothing about linux.

Thank you

Mike
