Mental Challenge

Postby Thomas52 on Mon Mar 31, 2003 9:05 pm

Well, I'm not sure this goes here, but hardly anything goes wherever around her ennyhoo, so...
Assume you have 12 baskets that can hold ANY amount, & you've 4000 apples. Put the apples in the baskets (which will then be 'sealed') in such a way that if someone asks for ANY amount of apples (1-4000) that you can meet the order (once anyway.)
PM me your answer (how many apples go in each basket) & I'll post the first correct one (although if you get the answer you'll know it's right.)
:bashhead ... & get a headache.

That's the man, haven't seen any of the PBS videos yet, but have read a good number of the books, including right now The Heretic's Apprentice, by Ellis Peters (a nom de plume for for her real name which is similiar but longer,)... good reads all.

Why am I NOT surprised to have a winner by the name of XJAN87?
(Those of you on the staff that know him won't be surprised.)
For a little progression, if basket 'A' held 1 appleand 'B" held 2, this would satify the need to deliver 1, 2 or 3 apples, as well as 3,999, 3,998, or 3,997 (by withholding those baskets.)
XJAN87 came up with 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 123, 250, 500, 1000, 2000. (The underline shows where the 'logical' progression goes awry.)
