Thanks for the recommendation, Hoss. I wonder if this is the same free program Kirker often mentions?

BTW, where the heck IS Kirker?

Sheri i remember all the problems you had with your anti virus programmes and the damage they had done. As i have mentioned before, i am using norton systemworks 2002 and anti virus and i have had no trouble whatsoever with my xp machine. As soon as norton 2003 comes on the market i am certainly going for it. I have tried a few anti virus programs and i know everyone has differing views on this subject, but i think i will now settle for norton in the future.

Who beamed Cap'n Kirker off this site??????????????????????????

Strangely, I haven't had any trouble with Norton 2002 since installing it after the MBR disaster. I still basically distrust Norton, though, because of the history, you know? I feel like I am sitting on a time bomb - or strolling through a graveyard after midnight.

Cliff, are you reading this thread? Please - when Bessie is built later this month, please do everything possible to make sure I have NO MORE antivirus conflicts.

Come to think of it. I think it was on the XP forum that I learned about AVG a year or so ago. I'll bet it was this Kirker's post that I learned about it from.

Anti-virus

Postby RRCinci on Sun Jul 21, 2002 12:05 am

Purp...I've got to agree with Hoss...AVG is far and away the best NON-INVASIVE virus scanner around! It doesn't get in the way...just sits there and does it's job without all the fuss and mess of some of the others! And the price is right too!!

AVG Hogging Resources

Postby hoss on Sun Jul 21, 2002 10:55 am

I'm not sure how to answer this objectively, but I just brought up Task Manager and looked at Commit Charge and the TOT was bouncing around but kept going back to 355216 for the largest value and PF usage was 346MB. Then I killed the two AVG processes that I saw and these values changed to 351952 and 343. The limit and peak for Commit didnt change.

But subjectively, I can't tell it is there unless it is doing its daily scan, which can be scheduled for any time of the day. I notice it because I hear the hard drive thrashing. And the scan only takes about 5 minutes for my 7GB of files. I never notice it at boot time on my Athlon 1700, but on a Pentium 233 you can see it pop up a boot sector scan window for a second or two.

I have AVG on the wifes computer and same as Hoss don't even know its there.

I would have it on mine but I had already purchased Norton and after the subscription runs out well you know what will be on my machine.
