In your situation you're going to need to borrow a Vista DVD or download one and burn it to a DVD. I can't think of any other way of restoring the Vista boot loader if you don't have a working installation of Vista.

Once you have a Vista DVD, just run a start repair from your Vista DVD (select Repair your computer) at the bottom left of the Install now setup screen when you boot from your Vista DVD and that will restore the Vista boot loader.

Unplug your external drive when run the startup repair.

Let us know if that works for you. What OS CD/DVD are you going to use...Windows XP? I found that running fixmbr from the XP CD only works if XP is installed and it removes the Vista boot loader.

I'd suggest you find a Vista DVD and then run either the startup repair that I suggested or bootsect /fixmbr from the command prompt of the Vista DVD but I think you'll find that running startup repair is a lot simpler.

I'd still suggest give Startup repair a try. Also, it's a good idea to create a recovery disc from your laptops recovery function as that will include all the drivers and programs that your laptop came with.

Oops Edit: I see you have a recovery DVD :)
