Hello smokeYou,
it is good to install *nix on your machine, but in my opinion I think KDE/Gnome taste depends more on the person himself, for me I like KDE more than Gnome and I didn't face harmful problems with it but it depends on your taste, I recommend that you install both and work on them and you will find out yourself which one you feel more relaxed when you use.

I think this link will be good for you:

I personally prefer gnome. With KDE, things seemed just a little sluggish, and I like the simpler look of gnome. Just feels more... I dunno... professional?

Funny, I feel KDE is more professional. But really I guess it just comes down to personal preference.

Hey, just checking back to see how this site is doing, am a linux convert now. Actually played around with both guis recently when I installed openSuse 10.3. Originally went with KDE3 because it had many apps and the interface is generally prettier, but it is definitely not as stable as gnome. Konquer(KDE's file browser) would sometimes crash on me especially when I utilize network folders, this wasn't the case with Nautilus(Gnome's file browser). I also feel that more apps such as vmware and stata are designed with gnome with in mind and generally offer greater compatibility GUI wise and probably code wise.

Gnome is definitely not as pretty but I feel like its more modern sophisticated, and works much better than KDE with my dual monitor setup. I can see why Ubuntu and Novell chose to default gnome as it feels much snappier and stable. But it all comes down to preferences, I chose KDE at first and decided to check gnome out after some minor details of KDE left me frustrated. All it took was a couple of clicks to get the gnome manager installed and it was definitely worth the effort. Also keep in mind that you can use most of KDE's applications with gnome and vice versa, with great performance. For example, I'm using KDE's screen shot utility because it has more features and its PDF reader because gnome's doesn't read them very well.

The only way to find out what's right for you is to try both for a couple of days and see which one you like better, you'll be surprised at the minor details that each offers that will make your linux experience much better.

becides the interface though. i belive that that kde is the best as fara s graphiacal apperiance goes but i had also herd that with kde you cant execute file from the desktop. i dont really care about looking professional i consider a pc as a personal computer not a public computer.

By professional, I guess I meant that I felt more 1337 using it, lol. As opposed to feeling non-1337 like when you get on someone else's computer and they have every freaking animated mouse pointer with custom jungle sounds for whenever they click on things and you're thinking to yourself "what a nub".

That answer didn't, by any means, sound professional. Hahaha.

Like I said, you may prefer the interface of one to the other, I personally prefer gnome because it's cleaner and less obtrusive than KDE.

Haha, I know what you mean.

Or when you go to their computer and they are still using the default background and their desktop is covered in icons because they haven't discovered they can save stuff other places besides the Desktop.

i go with Gnome as it's quicker, more responsive to heavy loads, and much more stable. I don't really care about looks so much, as long as it's a clean look. KDE was way to flashy the last time I used it, and it didn't seem as user friendly either.
