iPod Classic vs. iPod Touch

iPod Classic vs. iPod Touch

Postby gries818 » Thu Nov 27, 2008 9:17 pm

I bought a Dell DJ more than 5 years ago and have been using it ever since but it seems to be coming to the end of it's life. The up volume button barely works (usually it turns the volume down instead), the top is actually starting to come off and the battery life is much shorter than it used to be (like a day instead of like two weeks under normal use).

I've been very happy with it's durability and life span but it's just time for something new. I've known for awhile now I'd probably switch to an iPod when it was time, but now that it's time I'm really unsure of which one to get.

The iPod Classic has 160 GB and with no touch screen, I'm guessing it's more durable or at least harder to break.

The iPod Touch is just cool... and it's more than just a music machine - it's an entertainment device. The only thing I wonder about is how often I'd use it's extra features. I've had a Pocket PC before and experience from that has told me I'd rather not surf the 'Net on a mobile device, even if the internet is better on iPod's than it ever was on Windows Mobile. I'd get the 16 GB one if I were to go with this model.

I have 8 GB on my Dell DJ (it's a 30 GB), though I'd definitely take advatage of the ability to put movies (and podcasts) on my iPod... so I'd worry about only having 16 GBs. Also taking into consideration that my principle consideration is lifespan on the mp3 player, I'm leaning towards the Classic at this point.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Does anyone have either model?

Thanks!

I have had an iPod touch since March and I LOVE it. When my computer broke I used it for everything and it did the job well. Plugged in my headphones, opened the web browser and did whatever I wanted for hours on end. The keyboard is kinda finicky, but you don't need it to play music or anything. I use everything on it except the YouTube program, and the stocks application. I would TOTALLY recommend the iPod touch - it's like a computer in your pocket. And you can do anything you want with it. If you are in a place with service, I would get the iPhone... the only thing stopping me from getting it is Rogers (Canada) SUCKS with service plans, and I just moved to Northern Saskatchewan, so there is no GSM service up here haha.

I have an ipod touch but I don't know how cool it really is. sure it plays my music and does other stuff but without it being an iphone I can't take it anywhere to use it for anything else besides music unless i can find a hotspot. how is the ipod going to help me find directions without a wifi network around? really now. Plus the touch screen gets really annoying sometimes. they are cool but not that cool.

I went ahead and bought the iPod Classic. I like new technology like the iPod Touch, but at the end of the day I really just want something that will last and I think that Classic fits that requirement better.

I hang on to my technology so long I was joking today that the new iPod's memory (120 GB) is actually greater than that of my computer (80 GB). Kind of weird, huh?

Anyway, I'm liking iTunes a lot better than I ever liked Windows Media Player. It just works; much better than practically waging a war against Windows Media Player.

Any good recommendations on Podcasts? I've added the Onion to my list already!

Yeah I originally put it in the Debates/Opinions area because I wanted to hear people's opinions on the matter...

It was hard to find in this other forum... I don't actually think I've been in this one before lol.

you made a good choice, the screen is a lot more robust than any other ipod so far (it survived the party jukebox test) and it seems to survive a lot of falls and bumps without any real problems.

the battery life is amazing

and more importantly you can fit ALOT more music on it, for me mp3 players should fit your entire music collection on and with 36gb of music that just wouldnt happen on a touch.

i agree, a music player should hold ALL of your music, however i have over 650GB of music so for me thats not gonna happen... :(

i have a zune Ipod 80GB, and an Ipod Touch ( for games and internet ).

I had the same feeling when I wanted to upgrade from an IPOD NANO 4GB, but I ended up having the IPOD classic 80GB, which holds all my music and some podcasts, it won because of the capacity and the fact that when I want to listen to music in an airplane or in anywhere I am not into the touching thing :) I just want to click the play button. and it is way much cheaper than the touch. battery life rocks and screen is very nice. I have even watched a movie on it for testing purposes and it was not that bad.

when I want to surf internet I don't like to do it on a tiny screen, so I just turn on my laptop which is better than anything :)
