Install on C move drive to USB will it boot

Postby yeshuas on Mon Aug 04, 2008 8:31 am

If I install the OS while drive is internal, then move it to an external USB enclosure, and set the bios boot order to USB first will it boot?

Since no one replied I went ahead and tried it and it did not work, but maybe I did not do it correctly.

I was going to mess around more with Windows next OS by loading it on the original laptop HD that was in the Dell Latitude D520 and then when I wanted to mess with it I could just connect the external enclosure, change the date in bios and boot.
I did not delete the EISA partition, could that be the cause of the problem or is it not possible to do?

When I installed Win next OS it did something odd; instead of using all the free space to install itself onto, it created 2 partitions, one 500MB and the other of around 35GB which is the balance of the free space leaving the EISA partion as it was. So now it has 3 partitions, 1) EISA 47MB, 2) 500MB and 3)35GB

By the way it put the system files on the 500MB partiton bootsec.bak, boot etc.

I deleted the EISA partition using diskpart, reformatted the whole drive again, and installed the OS again.
Once again it created 2 partitions, one partition 500 MB and another partition the balance of the 40 GB HD. It also installed the system files and folder on the 500 MB partition, and the rest of OS on the second partition.
I then moved the drive to the USB enclosure and changed the boot order in bios to boot from the USB, but all it does is loop and not boot, so I guess it isn't possible to make it boot from the USB.

Why is it creating the 500 MB partition, and loading the boot folder bootmgr and the like on it?
