.htaccess file wont work... please help me?
there are certain directories that people can access on my webserver that i do not want them to be able to access. (my images directory and back end scripts directory for example)
i went into the /images/ directory and created this /htaccess file
- Code: Select all
deny from all
then a chmod 644 it and restart apache.
i can still access the /images/directory.
how can i fix this?
thanks for the help!
did you try the directory tag?
- Code: Select all
<Directory>
Order Deny,Allow
Deny from all
</Directory>

now to customise the authentication dialogue
Great...
i tried makeing individual .htaccess files for each directory. that didn't work (no surprise there ) so i thought "screw it, ill jsut add this stuff to the apache2.conf file.
well, i added it and it works!
i even managed to get authentication on one directory!
how can i customize the authentication dialogue so that i can set the title and a few other things (or can i?)

- Code: Select all
AuthUserFile /Path/To/.htpasswd
AuthName "PLACE THE NAME OF THE AREA IN QOUTES"
AuthType Basic
<limit>
require valid-user
</limit>

Well via apache there are a few options, though a more stream line solution may be to use a language like ruby and just cook up a quick authentication script.

its no big deal, i just wanted to see exactly what i could do.
Only allowing certain IP addys, or access via a certain route through the file system.
