How to get iTunes to work with Windows x64

Postby e to the x on Tue Aug 01, 2006 3:40 pm

Has anyone else had a problem with the new iTunes not being able to install on a 64-bit operating system? My iTunes had stopped working so I tried to install the newer version but get an incompatibility warning.

TIA

I quit using it because it's way to bloated. It wouldn't surprise me to see something like this though. If you want to manage the media on your iPod, you can use Winamp or MediaMonkey, the latest two versions work with iPods and that is what I use.

Yeah its occured to me that I really have no reason to continue using itunes, aside from the fact that quicktime and itunes install at the same time (can't use quicktime anymore either) since my iPod is dead. Good point Mark as you flipped a switch in my brain. A reformat is due soon anyways. System is getting too bogged down.

I can't use iTunes as it does Library cleanup (for some stupid reason) every time you close it, and for some reason, that takes ~5min with my library and the system becomes extremely slow when it does this. I don't need quicktime for anything, and since Winamp is lighter and better (at least I think so), I just use that.

I know this is an old thread but I've been needing to install iTunes on x64 (NOT Vista).

Basically the problem is this: Apple makes two different versions of iTunes, a 32-bit installer package (compatible with 32-bit versions of Windows XP and Windows Vista) and a 64-bit version that is only compatible with the myriad variations of Windows Vista x64. No matter how you go about downloading it, Apple

My personal favorite music manager is Songbird... it's a lot like iTunes as far as functionality but I find it much faster, nicer looking, and less bloated. Winamp, though, would probably be lighter but Songbird is worth a try.

The problem I have is there are songs which are only playable on iTunes (ones I've bought from the iTunes Store). I can certainly play most of my songs without it but I'd like to be able to play them on this rig since it has a killer sound system.

I do have iTunes on my laptop and can update my iPod from there but I'd like to be able to play them on my desktop too.
