Help with possible worm or virus

Help with possible worm or virus

Postby Saucy Jacky » Fri Mar 10, 2006 2:40 pm

Hello, I'm having some problems with my PC and was hoping someone could help me out. I run Windows XP Home Edition on my computer (a Dell), and several months ago I started having problems with my sound not working. Before long, I was unable to access my control panel, and I was totally unable to use my control panel at all up until about a week ago, when I started up the computer in Diagnostic Mode. Since then, my control panel and sound work, but my computer will not display the regular XP settings (like the blue start bar, etc.-it looks like Classic Windows, and I cannot change it back to the correct view).

In the past couple of weeks, I've also been getting these popup ads, some are porn, others say my computer has been infected with the Blackworm Virus and I need to download some program, which automatically tried to download. I immediately deleted that window, ran virus scan and even downloaded the fix for the Blackworm virus, but everything came out clear and it said I didn't have Blackworm infection.

This morning I noticed that my Windows Firewall was disabled and I cannot access my security center to turn it back on. I've run Symantec Anti-Virus software and have downloaded the most current updates (I've ran virus scans several times in the past few weeks), and have run SpyBot and Ad Aware both hoping to rid myself of these problems, but so far I've been unable to. Does anyone know what else I can do? Thanks!

Hello Saucy Jacky, and welcome to Pro-Networks.

Sounds like you've definately got some kind of infection. Pop-ups don't appear without some sort of provocation.

A good place to start would be to disable System Restore on your Hard Drives, reboot the machine into Safe Mode and then run your Anti-Virus scanner over it again. It may pick up something that was hidden under a standard XP Start-up.

If you need any advice on doing any of the above, let us know.

Hi Saucy Jacky and welcome. I moved the thread here as it will get more directed exposure. Since you have ads it's most likely spyware and you had a drive-by at some point. It was good that you stopped the subsequent dl of this crap. Take a look here to get you started. After running Spybot you may lose your internet so get lspFix before you run Spybot. BTW, as was said, do it all in safe mode.

Yeah...that's the "bite" about fixing some "spyware" or "Trojans"!! The fix destroys you Internet connection so you need the fix!! I use WinsockXPFix (link at the bootom of the page)...download it first so that you have it on hand to use if/when the TCP/IP gets "blown out"!!
