Hi there

I have heard of the "freezer" idea but not yet had any evidence that it works.

Anybody out there done this and made it work ??

No, really !

if the hard drive has kicked the bucket and you need to recover the lost data, try putting it in the freezer for about 30 minutes and then trying to load it. i know it sounds silly, but computer services at my uni do it all the time, and it really does help. drives that have been completely unreadable have functioned for upwards of 1 1/2 hours before dying again when the freezer trick has been used.

Interesting idea with the freezer... and just about one of the weirdest things I've heard of.

I've used the deep freeze trick before.

It does work and I've known about it for 2 or more years.......

Then again it may not...

Other trick is to swap controller boards with an identical drive. This doesnt always work either, but if you have access to do this, its worth a shot. People and myself in a shop(regualr shopno clean rooms or anything) have also tried swapping platters etc. We may have done this 25 or so times in 6 years(drives which needed data off but we couldnt justify sending it to a clean room or recovery center) and I think we had a partial succcess once(lucky).

However all the other drives were DEAD once we did it.

It truly is a last ditch effort where RMA or warranty work cant be had *All* other options have been exhausted.
