Did you all know Hula was banned from 1820-1979 in Hawai'i?
Yep, it was actually illegal to dance, and you could have been arrested for it. It was done mostly in private, but very rarely for show (due to the consequences). It was actually not until 1989 that the final 'ban' was lifted and the new law ratified, but technically 1979 was the year the US Government put the new "Native American Religious Freedom Act" into place.
I've always found it interesting a country built on the Freedoms of others was so harsh on our Native American's, and cultures of the past such as in Hawai'i.
I could go on about this for a week... touchy topic. A lot most people don't know.
