Get links to open new tab in IE8

Get links to open new tab in IE8

A basic question but I don't seem to be able to find the option to have links open a new tab instead of a new window in IE8. :question

If you right click you get the option to either open it in a new tab or a new window, among other things.

Also under tools then internet options there is a tab settings button, have you tried that?

No, not in Tweetdeck. There are no right click menu options in Tweetdeck other than "open link, copy link, select all." If I get 10 Tweets with links in them, each one opens a new window. It makes it impossible to use. The same applies to Messengers. You can only click the link and it opens whatever browser is the default.

It's not there. That's the thing. I remember that being in IE7. That's how I set it to open new tabs. But as soon as I installed IE8 I went looking for it and it's not there. That's why I posted this -- I thought maybe they moved it somewhere else. :question

EDIT: Okay, something is DEFINITELY not right here. I JUST had an Automatic Windows Update and it included an installation of IE8. I accepted the license, etc. and it installed and I restarted. But I just checked and the version I have says 6.0.2900.5512.xpsp_sp3 and it has tabbed browsing.

I still have I.E.7 on my XP machines, I am trying to see if it will offer it when I do an update now just to see what version it will be if it is there

I checked for updates twice, the first time it had me download and install Windows Genuine Advantage Notification, and the second time nothing, not even in the suggested downloads.

But that is probably because I didn't already have I.E.8 installed like you did.

I downloaded tweetdeck and it opens new links in a new tab, in I.E.7, and on one of my Windows 7 machines with I.E.8, it opens the link in a new tab, twice, yes I said twice, so when I click on a link in I.E.8 it opens two new tabs

By the way I tested Tweetdeck out on some links that a "larry411" provided, seems like a interesting fellow, you may want to check him out in tweetdeck

I just don't get it.

1) First of all, Update sent me IE8 without my even asking.

2) Second, IE8 is NOT even installed. IE6 is still installed even though it says IE8 was successfully installed.

3) Third, it is IE6 WITH tabbed browsing. I checked online and from what I can see you can have IE6 with tabbed browsing by installing the MSN Toolbar but I don't even have that either.

I'm not using Windows 7 or IE7.

Tweetdeck is the way to go. :yesnod:

Something is rotten in Denmark.

I thought I read somewhere that they were going to start pushing out or at least make I.E.8 available as a suggested download in Windows Update, and that is odd that you still have I.E.6 since you said it wasn't working and I thought you had upgraded to another version of I.E.

Exactly. I had upgraded to IE8 already and it was working fine. Then this Windows Update came down with IE8 in it, which I thought was odd since I had it but I thought it might be an updated version from the one I'd downloaded. But after all that I somehow ended up with IE6 with tabs.

I found a workaround. I went back and made FF my default browser again. Links open in new tabs. :P
