Introduction: Let's play 'guess the place'. Each day I'll post a SAT image of a common or not-so-common place on the globe and label it as Easy, Moderate, or Difficult. Images thanks to Google Earth. Each day you'll email your answer to me at: GeographyChallenge@pronetworks.org - PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR USER NAME!!

Rules and Points: Each day I'll award at least 1 point for easy, 3 points for moderate, and 5 points for difficult. Each correct guess wins points. No risk for guessing wrong on the site (as in a post here), but your official entry will cost you 1 point per wrong answer. You can guess up to 10 times per place each day, but you will loose a point for each wrong answer. If and/or when you get it right, you will receive the points for that place (determined by the ranking it had). If you continue to guess after getting it right, you will continue to be docked points. (As an example... if you guess 2 times on a Moderate ranked place and you got it right the first time, you'll get the 3 points for getting it right, but you'll also loose a point for guessing again incorrectly. Thus you will receive 2 points for the day total.)

This is important. You MUST participate in at least every other challenge. If you skip more than two you will be disqualified for the week and your points will not be worth anything in the rankings. This is to keep it fair and insure that no one builds a lead and then sits on it while others scrabble. You can skip every other contest if you like, but you must participate in at least 1 of ever 2 contests. These do have to be concurrent also... no guess 3 in a row, take 2 days off.

Each week a front runner will be named, and they become the challenger for the next week. This is both an honor and a risk for the challenger. First, no front runner can be the challenger more than once per month. If the individual is in the lead through the month, the 2nd front runner will become the challenger in the week after the first. Second, the front runner who is the challenger of the week cannot gain points in the 1 week they are challenger. This is a great risk to their lead and monthly ranking (which determines the prize). Thus, for each Easy spot the challenger can stump more than 5 people (does not receive 5 correct entrys), they will win 5 points. For each Moderate spot the challenger can stump more than 3 people on (does not receive 3 correct entrys), they will win 10 points. For each difficult spot the challenger can stump more than 1 person on (does not receive 1 correct entry), they will win 20 points. So being the challenger has both its risks and advantages.

The day after a challenge we'll announce the place and tally votes. At the end of each month I'll award a small prize for the person who won the most points (when they were not the challenger); announced below. I'll also update weekly on the top 3 contestants.

Feel free to work with others on the site in an attempt to guess the place and/or through others off each day. But only 1 person can win. You can use any resource available, and the hints I'll give.

Here's the Day 2 image; rated as: Moderate

No I'll be doing them all over the world. I can say the second is NO where even close to the first image ;)

The US has many recognizable landmarks though... and usually my hints should help.

Mount Saint Helens for example was in the news recently bc it erupted again. Plus I was born in 1980, the same year it made headlines on May 18th for literally blowing away one side of the mountain during one of its largest eruptions to date.

Did you get my entry John? If so, I didn't get a reply, which is fine but I just want to make sure you got it.
