Several months ago, the hard drive that had several thousand photos unexpectedly died. That sickening 'clunk' sound . . .

I'm finally prepared to try the freezing the drive thing but I have some questions & concerns before attempting this.

1. We have a Food Saver vac sealer. Should I set one of silica packs in there to absorb any moisture?
2. How long in the freezer? A day?
3. The biggest concern I do have is that I do not have any free SATA connections nor any desire to unplug any of the drives that are hooked up. Haven't looked to see what's available, but would an external enclosure be a smart thing to stuff that bad drive in?

If I were to get an external enclosure for the drive, would it be okay to install the drive in the enclosure before it goes in the freezer?

#1) Yes, good idea.
#2) Yes, a day is perfect.
#3) I would not use an enclosure as that complicates things and introduces possibly more complications, I see many posts of people whose Windows no longer recognizes the drive. I would personally rather keep things as simple as possible.

Yes, install the drive first as you don't want to be fumbling about with the enclosure while it's sitting there warming up every second you delay. Have everything ready like your machine already booted. Good luck moose!
