Free Media Streaming and Sharing Service

Postby jrfree1 on Sun Jul 03, 2005 4:52 pm

Orb Networks seems to have gotten most of the bugs out of their software, as well as discarded the fee based service in favor of a free one. This is a great service for people who want to be able to share or view their media content from remote locations. With a simple install of the Orb server software on a media computer you will be able to stream live or recorded tv, schedule recordings from remote locations, access and monitor webcams, store, view and share your photos, stream your mp3 collection, as well as a number other of interesting features.
The very cool thing about this software is that it interacts very well with Windows Media Center, even allowing you to stream live tv remotely from a Media Center computer with a set top box. It allows you to remotely change channels, set recordings, access the Media Center Audio, Image, and Video files that you choose.
To view any of this media content, all you do is log onto a free user created account at orb.com and use their web based interface to select the media you would like to see or hear. The software will automatically check your connection speed as well as codecs installed on the accessing computer, and determine the best speed and format to stream the media. Of course, the better connection you have, the better the quality.
As this software just reached the 1.0 milestone there will probably be many improvements and enhacements over time. For now though it is definitely worth checking out.

One thing that I will add to this review is that I have been playing with the service for a while now, and one thing I should advise is that make sure that you have plenty of ram as the Orb Server runs numerous processes and uses a good bit of memory. Also unless you want to run the service all the time, take it out of your startup folder and start it manually when you want to use it. It is also a good idea to stop the service before starting the MCE media center application as I have run into some sound problems occasionaly when both are running. I have had great success streaming both live and recorded tv - it has no problem with the DV-RMS files, however it will does not seem to be able to stream protected recordings such as those from HBO and Cinemax, although it will stream the live broadcasts from those.
