Thanks Bud. I'll be checking back in periodically. Unfortunately this comes at a bad time... lol. Trying to juggle this and family stuff at the same time.

Thanks again.

Sometimes it's a vicious circle. The only way some scanners will let you get rid of the virus is by turning off the scanner, deleting the infected file, emptying the recycle bin, and then turning the scanner back on.

Actually when it comes to the registry... I haven't a clue most of the time.

I'm actually a bit lost... but I understand what you are saying for the most part.

Right from the run type regedit and then nav to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\exefile\shell\open\command

Nah, just don't delete / change anything your aren't sure about. :)

Ok, I'll take a look at what you said.

What are the exact steps I should take in doing this. I don't mean to be an inconvenience... but I am a little new to virus crap. This is the first time I've ever had a major problem with one.

John, if you are uneasy editing the registry, just make sure to click "File-Export" and save anything you plan on deleting or changing. Give it a unique name with the "reg" extension. Then, if you want to undo it, bring up explorer, browse to the "reg" file you made and double click on it. After you confirm you want to make the changes to your registry, it will put the entry back you deleted.

I'm about to just reinstall Windows. This is getting over my own head.

I ran that virus thing online... found 5 files and deleted them, but it didn't work. I'm still blocked from all .exe file, including the Properties folder when I right click on My Computer. aka I cannot disable the System Restore feature.

regedit and msconfig both don't work in normal mode... they may in safe mode.

More bad news...

In Safe Mode, I am also given "cannot find errors" for:

regedit
msconfig
Right clicking on my Computer and going to Properties

Or anything else. I am going to try a System Restore, and then just reinstall unless you all have any other ideas?
