Dual boot for Windows XP SP 2 and Win 7 - Resolved

Postby micmic on Sat Jan 03, 2009 5:34 am

Hi,

I have XP installed first on my system, w/c is on C: and D: partition is Win 7, no problems with Win 7 and Win XP Pro SP2 but, on the boot screen where I can choose w/c to boot, I cannot use my up and down arrow key to choose w/c OS I want, but the countdown still continues until it ends and boot to the selected OS.

First in My XP partition.

on my XP partition boot.ini i have this only.

;
;Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems.
;Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options.
;
[boot loader]
timeout=90
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tried to install VistaBootPRO 3.2

and have this

There is currently 2 OS(s) installed on your system.
The current boot timeout is: 30

Default OS: Windows 7

Entry 1
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name: Earlier Version of Windows
BCD ID: {ntldr}
Boot Drive: C:
System Bootloader: \ntldr

Entry 2
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name: Windows 7
BCD ID: {default}
Boot Drive: D:
Windows Drive: D:
System Bootloader: \Windows\system32\winload.exe
Windows Directory: \Windows

NOTE: I did change the default OS to Windows 7 but earlier it was XP, problem there only is that I cannot choose from the boot screen.

Can anyone guide me on changing the boot.ini for my XP or Win 7????

did tried this step also - Open VistaBootPRO, ignore the prompt to backup your BCD. Go to the System Bootloader tab, select "Windows Vista Bootloader" in the first section and "All Drives" in the second section and then click Install Bootloader . Next, go to the Diagnostics item on the menu bar and select "Run Diagnostics". VistaBootPRO will default back to the Manage OS Entries page and you will see that you now have entries there for "Earlier versions of Windows" as well as "Microsoft Windows Vista".

reference to the step above is http://www.pronetworks.org/forum/about88231.html, but no luck

here is a screenshot of
VistaBootPRO 3.2 on my XP partition

So how do you change which OS you're going to boot to...by changing the default OS using VistaBootPRO?

Are you using a USB mouse or a PS2 mouse by the way? Just wondering if possibly your mouse hasn't been initialized by the time you get to the boot screen.

For me to choose what OS to boot I have installed VistaBootPro on both XP and Win 7, change it from there which OS will be the default, when I restart the system then it will boot to the bootscreen and highlight the default OS either XP or Win 7 then load from there, I am using a P/S - 2 mouse, then how do I initialized my mouse by the time it gets to the boot screen?

My PS-2 keyboard & Mouse both work fine when I get to the boot menu & can choose any of the OS's listed there.

Is your Kb a PS-2 also or usb, wireless?

Edit: Have you messed around in your BIOS at all?

Did not change anything on BIOS, but however my BIOS right now is running in Safemode, since it got corrupted due to power outage here, so far if an there is another outage here, I just put in the mobo disc and it will load a safemode BIOS, and everything will boot to Windows Normal, just only the problem is on the boot menu, keep on search for this and found nothing, did the steps properly, by the way I am using a Epox EP-5P965+GLI , reference to http://www.epox.com/usa/product.asp?id= ... plusGLI.... could my BIOS be the issue here???
