do it yourself vacations

Postby imintheloserssquare on Wed Mar 16, 2005 6:54 pm

skip the travel agent fee and do it all yourself!

first of all know when your going to travel get exact dates and such it helps out alot.
2. know where your going if you can afford multiple desitinations go for it.
3.how do you wanna get there? theres 3 basic options drive, train or plane
once youve figured it all out:
going by plane?
Orbitz
Expedia
Priceline
(theres many more ive just had real good luck with their vacation packages) you can save over $100 by booking your flight and hotel in one deal
try the train by going to Amtrak. they have some fairly decent vacation packages as well but they can get pricy the farther you go and depening on what station your going to.
some sites offer last minute deals...go for them if they are in your destination you can save 80% sometimes.
watch out for certain sites when you book your vacation because some offers while good do not allow cancellations in the event of sickness or your untimely death.
this looks time consuming but once you get it all together itll be the coolest thing youve ever done because you did it.

I agree. For the last few years, I've organised all of our holiday details myself. All we have booked is flights and hotels, either direct with the 'supplier' or through companies such as Expedia and TravelBag.

And using the Country's public transport facilities is a great way of getting to know the place. Buses, trains, metro systems (such as London's Underground) are all good ways of getting around, especially if you can buy a 'travelcard' that allows you to travel all day to any destination you like for a fixed fee. You just jump on at one stop, and jump off at the next one that grabs your fancy.

Another way, which is probably the best way to do it, is to use Shank's Pony and make your own way around your destination. You're guaranteed to see an awful lot more this way!
