This is one of those questions that people who develop in different databases are probally biased. The reason I say this is that a lot of times you see people post that MySQL outperforms DB2 when dealing with small/large scale databases containing numerous tables/rows. One problem with this is that it is not entirely true. DB2 has more functionality than MySQL which is a large factor on why MySQL can outperform DB2 when executing statements. MySQL has also been refered too as a "User Friendly" database environment compared to other databases. Although, MySQL can outperform DB2, is more user friendly, and can be connected to through Perl, it still will come down to what you are comfortable with.

What I like to do when choosing between two options (programming) is to start coding in one and then switch over to the other. Once I find out which I like better, I then start looking at the different speeds and configurations in order to help me choose the best DB so my clients will not be waiting for a query to be returned. After this, I then start browsing the Net on what other people are saying.

When it comes down to what most people are using, MySQL will win by a land slide. DB2 does not have a large support group like MySQL. This can be that not many people find it user friendly, it was too slow, or they just got frustrated with it, and went to something that was easier for them. Again, it all comes down to what you think will be easier for you. Check out the commands between DB2 and MySQL and see which one makes more sense to you.
