Windows XP home.
Customize Notifications (shows history of task-bar icons)
Rt. click START, Lt. click PROPERTIES, Lt. click TASK-BAR, Lt. click
CUSTOMIZE., then shown current and past icons(programs), I have been left with a couple of finished d'loads there which I am trying to remove.
Has anybody got the answer. I've tried the registry, hidden files, bks,
but no luck. PLEASE can someone HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To clear the Past Items list:

1. Use Regedit to navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify.

2. Delete the IconStreams Value Name.

3. Delete the PastIconsStream Value Name.

4. Close all instances of Windows Explorer.

5. Open Task Manager and select the Processes tab.

6. Select Explorer.exe and press End Process. This will kill the shell.

7. In Task Manager, press File / New Task and type explorer.

8. Press OK.

This is not too clear. When you say delete IconStreams value name just what are you supposed to delete. Do you right click on it and then just click delete. Please give the exact method. Thanks.

They do disappear in time if the exact same icon doesn't reappear.

It is exactly as he stated. You can right click on it or hit the delete key.
