CPU usage problem

Postby Fidget on Tue May 25, 2004 7:25 pm

OMG - have I actually arrived here? You have no idea of the travails I have traversed :confused
A prodigal child has returned to your doorstep, and as such children are wont to be it is because I am in need of your succor :embarrassed: .

today's problem -
Internet back-and-forth is soooo slow sometimes. Clicking to open a new window is like watching a horse race and cheering your guy on when the little green bars are barely moving, and sometimes I have to hit the back button and go at it again because it stops.
This is only periodic mind you.
CPU usage chart goes from normal for a while then suddenly spikes up to anything high to 100% for a moment, then normal again.

Had the internet server here today. Not a problem with them.
Believe it's a CPU problem.
I did a Tune-Up Utilities 2004 check (trial program), and between that and Windows task manager (which agrees) I get:
In 'processes' it says:
High - csrss.exe (0-2%), Winlogon.exe (0%)
Above normal - smss.exe
Low - System Idle Process (66-94%)
Average - MemOptimizer.exe (4-8%)

Can anyone understand this? Can anyone tell what my problem is? I have been doing my research on the 'net, and wonder if it's a fan or heatsink problem. (I tried to delete csrss.exe and the computer shut down, restarted and said it recovered from a serious error. Obviously I am out of my league (as usual) in a totally unfamiliar lake (which I try to avoid - hence my ability to come crying to you)

Now this is all greek to me. Can anyone help? Or suggest (in computer-meek rather than computer-geek language please) what I should do?
Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou!

What are your specs? And did you scan for viruses and spyware?
