Command and Conquer: Generals

This certainly isn't the place for angry political discussion on the fragile state of world peace, but there comes a time when even quiet types could be throwing up their hands in shock. And with Command and Conquer: Generals, that time is now. It's one of the most highly-anticipated games of the year, but within ten seconds, it feels creepy.

With its complete disregard for human rights, morality, and world suffering, Generals manages to make you feel uncomfortable. It rates alonside hardcore 3D rampage GTA III as a game to challenge your conscience. It begins with the voiceover from the introductory cut-scene - cue heavy rock music and on-screen pyrotechnics. "SCUD LAUNCHER! CARPET BOMBING! TOMAHAWK MISSIIIIILE!" On screen, Middle Eastern peasant villages explode, with burning civilians rushing around, screaming in agony and terror.

Soon after, we're playing as a terrorist faction (the GLA), as they seek to steal supplies from China. They intercept and destroy aid vehicles, and annihilate any innocent villagers who get in the way. It's all very harsh. Technically, it's certainly the best Command and Conquer game yet. A ratings system sees your powers and units become more customisable and effective as you go on, and there's always a choice of tactics. It also still looks fabulous, if you can stomach innocent people suffering horrible death in such detail.

Get beyond the 3D action and you may be troubled. Games inspiring violence? This time, global violence has inspired another point-and-click game.
