You are correct.
But it isn't so much a change in story as just 2 different means of causing global warming.
Look at it this way: if you have diabetes, you need insulin or you may get sick and you may die. However, too much insulin and you may get sick and you may die.
Basically, when pollution was caused by greenhouse gases, it helped to destroy the ozone layer, letting in too much ultraviolet light. Smog also prevented the heat of the Earth from radiating out at night so that warming occurred. Now, the sudden turanaround and cleanliness of the air is letting more sunlight in than was being let in before.
It's all about a balance. The pendulum swung too much one way, so now we are paying the consequences. If the pollution hadn't occurred in the first place, we would have achieved a natural balance.
