That's weird as one only gets Windows.old files when installing over. Trust me , I've done it.

That's not a clean install. Since you don't seem to care about XP, reinstall Vista making sure that you select the proper option. You do need to have an extra partition to install Vista to if you want to keep XP though it may be too late now.
