Hey guys, i've tried to boot to windows xp after installing vista 5472 on the XP installation,and in a search on the forum i've found this command that i need to give:
bcdedit /set {ntldr} device partition=C:

But after i made this proccess, when i load the "old windows version" in the boot manager it says "no boot.ini" or something like that, what can i do??

Hi asot03 and welcome to PROnetworks

Try this - not sure if it will solve your specific problem but it may. Download VistaBootPRO 2.1 and install it and then browse to the Programs>PROnetworks>VistaBootPRO folder, copy bootsect.exe and paste it into your Windows\system32 folder and then open the command prompt and run:

bootsect /NT60 ALL

This will pull all OS's on your system into the Vista boot menu.

If you get an access denied error returned, then first disable UAC by double clicking the username icon on the start menu and select Security options and then uncheck UAC and restart your system and run the command again

If that does not work then remember the error message you get so that we can go from there

my old windows (XP) is moved by Vista to "Windows.old" if it help...

I'm afraid you have then installed Windows Vista on top of Windows XP in an upgrade install. It's not impossible to recover your XP installation but it is a major excercise.

That's weird as one only gets Windows.old files when installing over. Trust me , I've done it. That's not a clean install. Since you don't seem to care about XP, reinstall Vista making sure that you select the proper option. You do need to have an extra partition to install Vista to if you want to keep XP though it may be too late now.

OK, that makes sense now. Yes you can have both but all will be lost from your previous state. Do a clean install of XP, then go to XP's disk management and create a new partition where you will send Vista to, assuming your hard drive isn't partitioned yet. This is the easiest way, as long as you backup your stuff first.

No DON'T do this yet... we may be able to get it back... Grav!ty has a method that can be used to fix this so don't hurry into to it
